Most Mercedes owners assume that if their car were affected by a safety recall, they’d know about it. In practice, that isn’t always true. Recall letters are sent to the registered keeper the manufacturer has on file, and if your Mercedes has changed hands, moved address with its owner, or been imported, that letter can easily go astray. We regularly see cars come into the workshop on the Wirral with recall work that has been outstanding for years, simply because nobody told the current owner.
The good news is that a Mercedes recall check is free, takes a couple of minutes, and gives you a clear answer.
What a recall actually is
A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer identifies a defect that affects a batch of vehicles, usually defined by model and build date. In the UK the process is overseen by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). Recalls range from software updates and replacement fasteners through to airbag, fuel line or steering components. Some are precautionary; a small number are serious enough that the owner is told not to drive the car until the work is done.
Crucially, recall work is carried out free of charge, and that applies to the current owner regardless of the car’s age or how many keepers it’s had.
How to run a Mercedes recall check
There are two straightforward ways to check:
- By registration number: the GOV.UK vehicle recall service at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall lets you enter your number plate and see whether any recalls are still outstanding on that specific car.
- By make, model and year: the same service lets you browse every recall issued for, say, a 2016 C-Class. This is useful when you’re looking at a car to buy but don’t have the registration yet, though it shows recalls for the model rather than confirming whether an individual car has had the work done.
The registration check is the one that matters for a car you already own, because it reflects whether the recall has been closed off on that vehicle.
Why second-hand buyers should always check
If you’re buying a used Mercedes on the Wirral, a recall check belongs on the same list as the MOT history and the service history. An outstanding recall isn’t a reason to walk away, since it’ll be fixed for free, but it does tell you something about how closely the previous owner kept on top of the car. It’s also far better to find out before you hand over the money than when a warning appears on the motorway.
What happens if your car has an open recall?
Official recall work is funded by Mercedes-Benz and carried out through its authorised retailer network, so you’ll need to book that particular job with a Mercedes-Benz dealer. That’s the one area where the main dealer is the right place to go, and it doesn’t affect where you have your car serviced day to day. You can continue to use an independent specialist for servicing, MOTs and repairs, and your warranty stays intact either way.
When you call to book the recall, have your registration and ideally your VIN (found on your V5C logbook and at the base of the windscreen) to hand. If the recall notice says not to drive the vehicle, follow that advice and ask about collection.
How we help at MB Wirral
When your Mercedes comes in for a service or MOT, we connect it to our Mercedes Star diagnostic equipment, which can show when a control unit is running out-of-date software, sometimes a clue that a campaign hasn’t been applied. If we spot signs of an outstanding recall, we’ll tell you, explain what it involves, and let you know whether it’s something to arrange straight away or at your convenience. Everything else (servicing, diagnostics, repairs and updating your digital service book) we’ll continue to look after as normal.
Quick recap
- Recall letters go to the keeper on record, so second-hand owners often miss them.
- Check by registration at gov.uk/check-vehicle-recall: it’s free and takes minutes.
- Recall work is free, whatever the age of the car or number of owners.
- Recalls are handled by a Mercedes-Benz retailer; your routine servicing can stay with your independent specialist.
